Archive Producers Discovery Webinar recording
Catch up on the webinar held on 16 July that gave an overview to the 2025 iteration of our Grierson DocLab: Archive Producers training programme. Plus, browse questions from the session that we didn't get a chance to cover...

Discovery Webinar
Hear from Director of Training Programmes at the Grierson Trust, Yen Yau, plus lead trainer Sam Dwyer, Prime Video Pathway's Donna Taberer and Archive Producers Alumni Chris and Ella. They discuss what the training programme covers, the impact of the scheme and answer your questions.
We answer some of the questions we didn’t get a chance to cover in the webinar…
Would you consider people with a mixture of factual entertainment and documentary credits? Or are you looking for people with primarily high end documentary credits?
A mixture is fine as long as you demonstrate your experience of working with archive
Is it 4-8 years of experience in archives, documentaries, or production in general?
It is combined experience across industry.
Would experience from our own projects outside of work be relevant experience to share?
You need to have demonstrable experience of working within a production company, so if you have that as well that is fine. Personal projects are always an additional string to your bow, but production experience will be essential.
Do you consider people who have worked across audio documentary or only TV?
Knowledge and experience within production companies is necessary, as making a podcast has some similarities to documentary, but there are big differences, and you need that baseline of understanding.
Would my post-production more senior edit assist experience qualify me for this?
You need to have experience within a production company.
I have around 12 years exp in factual TV followed by 20 years working in video prod/marketing - is that OK?
You are welcome to apply but our ideal candidates will have four-to-six years’ industry experience, up to eight if they have taken a career break.
I’ve spent the last three years working on a popular factual entertainment series for a major broadcast that is archive heavy. I joined the production as an Archive AP and was promoted to Archive Producer, I’m obviously still early on in my career and have A LOT to learn but does this rule me out? I’m really eager to gain more experience across different programmes types, documentaries, etc.
If you already have an archive producer credit, you will not be eligible as it suggests you have experience beyond what we will be covering in the training programme.
I have worked as researcher and production asst but also a director (for C4), but interested in archive, is this programme applicable to me?
You would be eligible if you meet all the other criteria regarding minimum years and proven interest in archive.
How do you prove the interest in archive 🙂? Like what would be an example of proven interest?
The application form will expect you to talk about documentaries you have watched recently and about archive in particular. The interview process will also involve a discussion about your interest in archive.
Most of the archive / archive-related work I have done has be in the independent film / short film / fine art film as opposed to TV / feature film – is this ok?
You need to have experience within a production company that makes programmes/docs for broadcasters and/or streamers.
Can you be based both in UK and EU in order to apply? You need to have the right to work and live in the UK, and the scheme is focussed on those who want to work in the UK.
Having the experience in TV and documentaries but outside the UK, would I be eligible to apply?
As long as you have the right to work and live in the UK, yes, and as long as you meet the other criteria.
The residential details... will we have our own rooms?
Yes, trainees will have their own rooms at the residential.
I am mainly an Editor. I have also worked in film restoration and supervised the restoration work of an archive based film. And some other operations experience in the encoding department at a streaming platform. I’m not from a Production background per se but want to pivot to archive producing specifically. I heard you are looking for production managers, researchers etc. Will my editing and restoration experience be considered or will it be deemed as a first timer?
We are seeking those with experience of working within a production company, so candidates have to show in their application solid understanding of how productions work.
