Werner Herzog crowned with the Grierson Award for Best Documentary At the BFI LONDON FILM FESTIVAL.

Into the Abyss

At last night’s 55th BFI London Film Festival, Werner Herzog’s Into The Abyss: A Tale of Death, A Tale of Life was crowned with The Grierson Award for Best Documentary.

A partnership between the Grierson Trust and the Festival, The Grierson Award for Best Documentary recognises outstanding feature-length documentaries of integrity, originality, technical excellence or cultural significance. The Award is presented in commemoration of John Grierson. Two-time BAFTA winner Adam Curtis chaired the jury, which also included documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto alongside Mandy Chang and Charlotte Moore of the Grierson Trust.

Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, a Tale of Life is a film about two Death Row inmates in the USA. We do not know when and how we will die. Death Row inmates do. Werner Herzog embarks on a dialogue these two men and the people around them. He asks questions about life and death and looks deep into these individuals, their stories, their crimes. A gaze into the abyss of the human soul.
