Synopsis

A group of teenagers explain how they interpret family and what friendship means to them. The documentary is set in south London and deals with how young people are looked upon.

A word from the filmmaker:

My inspiration came from my own childhood – and what my little brother is going through now - where as a young member of the group you’re kind of looked after by the older members. And as you get older you begin to take on more and more responsibility for looking out for the younger members. I also think it’s important to try and show another side to the gang culture image that people have.

During this project I have been lucky enough to work with established filmmakers and specialists in the industry. This has allowed me to build my skills in filmmaking, editing and production. Through this experience I have met people from different backgrounds. I have also had many new and inspiring experiences.

Although I have studied film and media, the guidance and support I have had through this project has given me a great deal of confidence and determination to continue in the film industry. I hope to continue making documentaries and dramas and work with and learn from other members of the industry.

The highlight of this project was working with the Grierson team, Brian Hill and Century Films. When I planned out my project Brian made sure I took everything into consideration and had all the equipment I needed to achieve my production. Working with Brian and The Grierson Trust reminded me that everything I did had to be at the highest standard I could achieve.

It was great to spend time interviewing and learning about what was important to the group of teenagers I worked with. Watching the final production come together allowed me to understand exactly what it takes to produce a documentary to industry standard and this is exactly what I want to continue to do as my career.

Max Goldini, biography

Max has been studying filmmaking at City College Brighton and Hove. This is his first documentary.
