The Grierson Trust commemorates the pioneering Scottish documentary maker John Grierson (1898 - 1972), famous for Drifters and Night Mail and the man widely regarded as the father of the documentary.
Each year, The Grierson Trust recognises the best documentary filmmaking from Britain and abroad through the British Documentary Awards. The Trust encourages new filmmakers through its Education and Mentoring schemes.
Dates for 2014 Grierson Awards
The entry form for the 2014 Grierson Awards will be online from Tuesday, 1 April 2014. The closing date for entries is Friday, 30 May. The competition is open to documentaries that have had their first UK screening between 1 May 2013 and 30 April 2014.

Film maker William Jessop celebrated in the autumn of 2011 when he was crowned winner of a pitching session at Sheffield DocFest. Facilitated by The Grierson Trust, he scooped the Trust's £2000 prize money to help him get his film, Growing Up Down's off a storyboard and into production. The results can now be seen on BBC Three on Monday 3rd February at 9pm as part of the channel's Fresh strand.

The Grierson Trust has appointed Lorraine Heggessey (Co-founder Boom Pictures and former BBC One controller) to chair the Grierson Board of Trustees. She replaces outgoing chairman, Dawn Airey, who is stepping down following her appointment as Head of Yahoo! in EMEA.
